Scottish Government refuse wind farm application?

The BBC¹ announced today the Scottish Government has turned down the application for the Lewis Wind Farm² containing 181 turbines on the Western Isles of Scotland.

Despite the full support of the Western Isle Council, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar³, the project planned by Lewis Wind Power Limited has had it’s application turned down by the Scottish Executive⁴ in Edinburgh.

Although this decision has obvious local economical implications, its impact on renewable energies⁵ is also damaging. This could affect other applications of a similar nature through out Scotland. It was believed the decision was made after 5000 letters of protest were received by the Scottish Executive.

Lewis Wind will persist with their application for the wind farm. Lewis Wind will need to convince the local people of the Isle of Lewis that, in the longer term, it is better for the community to embrace the wind farms as not only will it help the communities social-economical situation it will help the country as whole reach it’s renewable energy goals set by the EU.
